What Is the role of face mask during COVID-19?

Face Mask are becoming part of our life due to the COVID19 pandemic crises; a lot has been told about them so we will try to get some clarity around it to help you do a thoughtful decision when buying it.

A large proportion of the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) appears to be occurring through airborne transmission of aerosols produced by asymptomatic individuals during breathing and speaking. Aerosols can accumulate, remain infectious in indoor air for hours, and be easily inhaled deep into the lungs.

Given how little is known about the production and air-borne behaviour of infectious respiratory droplets, it is difficult to define a safe distance for social distancing.
A good comparison is exhaled cigarette smoke. The distance from a smoker at which one smells cigarette smoke indicates the distance in those surroundings at which one could inhale infectious aerosols. Ultimately, the amount of ventilation, number of people, how long one visits an indoor facility, and activities that affect air flow will all modulate viral transmission pathways and exposure.

For these reasons, it is important to wear properly fitted masks in-doors even when 6 ft apart. The WHO recommended universal use of face masks.

What types of Face masks are in the market:

Surgical Mask: it's a face mask used by healthcare workers to prevent large respiratory droplets from reaching the mouth of the wearer; also reduce the spread of large respiratory droplets from the person wearing it.
Cloth Mask: it's a cloth face mask that includes various forms of self-made or commercial masks; they are not standardised and not intended for use in healthcare settings.
Personal Protective Equipment: it's a face mask used by healthcare workers designed to protect the wearer from exposure to airborne contaminants.

Recent studies are showing that the aerosol filtering efficiency of different materials, thicknesses, and layers used in properly fitted cloth masks was recently found to be similar to that of the medical masks that were tested (https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsnano.0c03252).

Cloth Face Mask that are properly produced will help protect the wearer and the society he lives in, reducing the spread of the virus: Wearing a mask is an act of solidarity!

Nevertheless, wearing a face mask should not create a false feeling of security and the wearer should follow some simple rules when using them:

We hope you learned a bit more about Face Masks, when and how you should use it.
