WebOn July 4, 1964, the South Dakota State Legislature officially changed the name to Black Hills State College. Enrollment grew throughout the following decades. Construction of a new library and expansion of the academic program offerings established the college’s future direction. The predecessor to Black Hills State University operated from 1881 to 1883 and was called Dakota College or Dakota Academy. Dakota College was funded by the Congregational Church and was not affiliated with BHSU.
